Periodontology
Periodontology is a subset of dentistry that deals with the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease. The mildest form of periodontal disease is called gingivitis and the inflammation includes only the gingiva (gums). This is the initial stages of gum inflammation caused by the presence of plaque and tartar on the teeth. The plaque consists of bacteria, food debris, and cells of the body. Tartar, or dental calculus, is a build-up of plaque on the teeth that's been allowed to harden and which can not be removed from the patient alone. Gingivitis is characterized by bleeding, swelling, redness of the gums and bad breath. Gingivitis is the initial phase of periodontal disease. Untreated gingivitis deepens in periodontitis. This disease engages the whole supporting apparatus of the tooth, resulting in a loss of the bone level. Untreated periodontitis leads to tooth loss.To prevent the development of periodontal diseases, regular cleaning of plaque and tartar by dental professionals, screening and high level personal oral hygiene are needed.
Cleaning of tartar takes place via ultrasound machine and by hand instrumentation. In severe periodontitis the dental laser Biolase Waterlase is used to aid the closed curettage of the periodontal pocket. In this way can be achieved maximum sterility of the periodontal pocket. Healing process occurs very quickly, painless , and the patient feels very comfortable.
Particular attention must be given to the patient and their personal oral hygiene. Use dental floss, interdental brushes for brighter spaces, tongue cleaner, mouthwashes.
High oral hygiene is life without cavities!
