Endodontics - root canal treatment

Endodontic treatment (root canal treatment) is a manipulation that occurs when the dental pulp (nerve of the tooth), most often as a result of deep cariesis, is irreversibly inflamed (pulpitis) or non-vital (necrosis, granuloma).

These diseases are not necessarily associated with pain, but require root canal treatment to prevent complications. When correctly implemented, endodontic treatment is therapy with high chances of success, i.e. allows the tooth to be preserved. Well conducted endodontic treatment involves a determination of proper diagnosis, aseptic work (isolation with rubber dam), determination of correct root canal length with radiography and apex locator, working under magnification with a microscope, cleaning and shaping of root canals with flexible nickel-titanium files, that preserves the root canal anatomy, filling (obturating) the canals with a thermoplastic gutta-percha. Dental microscope and endodontic treatment

During the endodontic treatment the tooth is opened under local anesthesia and the diseased or necrotic nerve is removed. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped, disinfected and filled. Detection and treatment of often narrow and curved root canals is optimal under the dental microscope, which provides excellent illumination and up to 20-fold increase in the working field. This allows a view of the inside of the root canal. Dental microscope is useful at any stage of the endodontic therapy for control of the utilised manipulations, but its support is absolutely indispensable for endodontic re-treatment, i.e. in the cases where it is necessary to remove the old incorrect root canal filling and place a proper one.
